Description: Vise is 1913-1920 (see screenshot of the 1913 catalog page, from Internet ArchiveLS Starrett bought out the Athol Machine Co in 1905, so this is definitely his era, but made before the name was changed to Athol Machine & Foundry Co (~1920). This was made when Henry Ford was turning out his 15 million Model T's. If you have a car of that era sitting in your shop, this would look at home on your bench. As found, with no evidence of damage, cracks, welding or repairs. Slight bend in the handle as you can see in the picture. Jaws are slightly nicked at the top edges (as shown in photo), but meet cleanly, open smoothly, and stay parallel when opened and closed.Marking all over the top of the slide (from being used as an anvil), but there are no cracks that we can see. The only thing I'd want to change if I put this on my bench is there is a little more backlash than I would like, when turning the handle before the jaw moves. Usually this problem responds to shimming of the collar on the spindle. I haven't torn this down, so I don't know if that's the case with this vise. (Kevin Scott would have turned a new collar; he preferred backlash at a quarter to half-turn; this is a full turn.) If you can't come pick it up, I'll build a custom crate; shipping to lower 48 will be flat rate $75.
