Description: Up for sale is this rare find, vintage antique, in two volumes, Julius Sachse "Old Masonic Lodges of Pennsylvania, Moderns and Ancients 1730 - 1800" (Philadelphia, 1912); original blue cloth, edition 245 of 1500, presentation copy from Norris Stanley Barratt to Edward Hopkinson Jr. The note reads "For Edward Hopkinson Jr Esq whose ancestor Thomas Hopkinson, a member of St Johns Lodge, was Right Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania (Moderns) in 1736 with the kind regards of Norris S. Barratt" dated March 18, 1916 with added notes on sections pertaining to the Hopkinson Family. The bookplate included reads "Ex Libris Norris Stanley Barratt, Nosce Teipsum, Barratt's Chapel 1780". Barratt's Chapel located in Frederica, Delaware, is the oldest surviving church building in the United States built by and for Methodists. Known as the "Cradle of Methodism," the site is an officially designated Heritage Landmark of the United Methodist Church. Constructed in 1780, this simple but stately brick house of worship was where the pioneers Thomas Coke and Francis Asbury met in 1784 to plan for the establishment of the Methodist Church as an independent denomination. condition.
