Description: The Holy Grail of collectable pitons- An authentic Salathe Ption In 1946 in Yosemite Valley, John Salathé, a Swiss-born climber and blacksmith, noted how inadequately these European pitons worked in the solid Valley granite. He decided to make an even harder piton out of an old Ford Model-A axle: high-carbon chrome steel with vanadium and molybdenum. He made several pitons that could be re-used many times for his multi-day first ascents. Incidentally The piton has CW stamped into the metal below the Salathe Diamond P trade mark. This piton was once owned by Charles Wilts an historic climber in his own right. Chuck Wilts was Salathe's partner for the 5 day Lost Arrow Chimney FA. Outside magazine even uses my photo of my Salathe in their article. How is that for provenance.
