Description: The state of Arizona is under a stay-at-home order which is making our shipping difficult. We are extending our shipping limit to 20 days. We hope to ship in less time, and we hope soon to be back to our old policy of ten days. We ask for and hope for your patience. Once upon a time, and a very good time it was, chess sets were often made of wood and always made by master craftsmen. Immortal names like "Jaques and Sons" and "Ayres" and "Uhlig" dominated the chess set market. After World War II a French firm, Lardy, set out to capture the wood chess set market. They made both high-end collector's sets and ready-market sets. This is one of the high-end sets made in the 1960s. This set, as the photograph shows, was imported by the E.S. Lowe company. As E.S. Lowe went out of business in 1973, this set is before that date, probably in the 1960s. Lardy is also out of business, so this set is a collector's item. This set is large, and I mean quite large, though not huge. The royalty is an odd lot. The kings are 4 1/4 inches tall, with 1 3/4 inch bases. The queens are odd. The White queen is also 4 1/4 inches tall, with a 2 inch base. The Black queen is 4 inches tall with a 2 inch base. The size differences are hard to spot unless one looks closely. The Black queen has some minor chips to the black lacquer. Please look to the photographs. The chess men are just a tad large for a standard vinyl board. A board with 2.5 inch squares will probably do. All the pieces are in very good condition without any noticeable "Lardy Leans," a bending of the pieces by some loose lathe work. The men are weighted, without cracks. The felt is very good; I suspect the set was never used. The varnish is glossy; the box is in acceptable condition; there are cracks in the inside bottom of the box; it would probably be wise to reinforce the bottom. I, Ed Yetman, have been a tournament director for 40 years and verify that this set is legal for tournament play according to the U.S. Chess Federation rules, though other directors may disagree.
