Description: Because of stay-at-home orders in Arizona and the problems it creates, we are lengthening our shipping time window to 20 business days. We regret the inconvenience and hope to return to ten days in the near future. In The Queen's Gambit, shortly after Beth Harmon is adopted, her adoptive mother takes her shopping for clothes at Ben Snyder's. As they go in, Beth halts, and says excitedly, "They have chess sets!' The sets in question are not given a close-up, but this is a set from that era. Edwin S. Lowe founded his toy company in the 1940s, and from 1959 to 1973 he made and sold chess sets. This set is from that era. Chess players with grey in the hair or wrinkles, will remember these sets a fixture of their childhoods in the 1960s. The pieces are hollow, made by plastic injection moulding. Many of these sets have long since disappeared off to the Lord knows where; this set is in remarkably good condition for its age. The box has survived the many joys of childhood, and it bears those marks: tears and scrapes and dents. But the board and men are nearly perfect. We don't have the original instructions, so we make up for that with two publications of our own. In 2000, to mark the Millennium, two brothers started publishing a little magazine described as a cross between Mad Magazine and Chess Informant. Madcap, irreverent, and clearly different from other chess magazine, Yetman Brothers' Descriptive Chess Magazine was one of a kind. It was published nine times a year: New Year's Day, Winter, April Fools' Day, Spring, 4th of July, Summer, Hallowe'en, Autumn, Christmastide. The brothers ceased publication of the magazine in 2009, but their spirit and their writing lives on in their monographs. We have included our little handbook on how to play chess. It shows everything you need to know to play, with copious examples in both English Descriptive and algebraic notation. We also include a monograph for more advanced play. What are gambits? What are counter-gambits? What are the ideas behind them? This little monograph gives you an introduction to gambits and counter-gambits, including the King's Gambit (1. P-K4 P-K4, 2. P-KB4) and the Queen's Gambit (1. P-Q4 P-Q4, 2. P-QB4). Other gambits are also discussed. Here are 24 games, annotated by Ed Yetman, ICCF master. Paper construction, saddle stitched, English Descriptive notation. The Allan Troy estate has over 1,000 listings. Type in "Vintage Allan Troy" in the search engine to see our listings. We have something for everyone! If you are a fan of the Netflix series The Queen's Gambit, you will want to check us out. We combine shipping!
