Description: Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. You are looking at a 1970's era Shure Brothers PE588 (same as the 588SA) Dynamic cardioid microphone with High impedance giving it a very mid range tone with just a touch of bass but far less than a low impedance mic such as the Shure SM-58 model. This microphone is great for vocals / general broadcasting and singing as it was intended. If you have a deep voice like myself then this will actually work very well for you. This PE588 has a strong, clear signal despite being over 40 years old and comes with the newer Shure model mic clip, cable and mic pouch shown. I'm not sure that this mic was ever used much. One of the nicest examples I have ever come across. Pic # 2 is from an older Shure advertisement showing the mics basic specs. This is a very underrated and obscure Shure model mic that is very affordable and has that classic mid-century vibe. It should be noted however that these mics are pretty hit and miss as most were used hard over the years. They aren't as rugged as the SM-58 model so if you see a PE588 or 588SA with a dented front screen be wary as quite a few of these out there no longer work or barely. This mic was very well taken care and used gently over the decades. It works like brand new and has been thoroughly gone over. It will not disappoint. So this mic comes with a short custom built cable that I built. It will allow you to use the mic. The reason being is that the mic was factory set at high Z and originally came with a long XLR to male 1/4 inch cable but the cable was lost and you cant just use a regular XLR cable on the mic because of it's unique inner hi Z wire setting. I had to build the short cable to allow you to use any longer XLR cable as an extension. You have to use the short cable on this mic but it allows you to use any standard XLR cable now. If you try to use a regular XLR cable on the mic without the short cable attached the mic won't work. It's just the way Shure wired the mic. The original cable was not included with the mic so again, I had to build the short cable. Pic # 3 is of a Shure 588SA or SB I sold a few years ago. That actual mic in pic # 3 was actually used on the set of The Joker movie. It was used in the stand up comedy club scenes that takes place a few time throughout the movie. This 588 came in both the SB and SA model. The SB model was the factory set low impedance version while the SA was the factory set high impedance version. The PE588 is also a high impedance mic. The original satin chrome finish on this example shows virtually no signs of wear and has a gorgeous luster. The Shure logo that encircles the bottom of the globe looks excellent as well. The XLR pins on the mic have been cleaned to ensure a perfect signal when the short cable is attached. A newer foam insert is inside the globe (pop filter) and looks very nice helping with the overall characteristics. The chrome globe looks great with zero dents or tarnish. This mic has never been dropped. These early 60's and 70's era dynamic cardioid mics are often better than the mics being made today because of the higher quality control and materials used. It's pretty hard to beat the sound of these Shure microphones. This PE588 does have some weight to it. It's a heavier stick mic and built like a tank. The on / off switch slides smooth and works perfectly with zero issues. The newer Shure mic clip that works very well for this mic and they won't scratch the satin chrome handle as the compound in the newer mic clips are softer. The clip will screw onto any desk or floor stand and has a wide degree of tilt up and down. The clip shows zero wear. The newer Shure black vinyl mic pouch looks excellent and the zipper work perfectly. A great place to store the mic when not in actual use to keep those scratches, dents and nicks away. This mic is ready to go. MICROPHONE STAND IS NOT PART OF THIS SALE...FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY. Overall I would rate this mic a conservative 9 + on a scale of 1 - 10 in the cosmetic department but I would recommend actually using this piece rather than for display. She's got plenty of life left in her. Made right here in America and built to last! As with all my vintage microphone and related items... I can promise you will be happy with it for the price paid. If not...I have a no hassle return policy. The shipping will be on you as I believe that's fair but the purchase price would be refunded. Simply return in the same nice condition...period. Check my rating. International buyers are welcome as well. Buyer must pay within 24 hours or an unpaid case will be opened and the item will be immediately relisted. Domestic buyer will get priority shipping. If you have any questions feel free to ask and...thanks for looking.
