Vintage 1940s Round 10” Loose-Wiles Biscuit Tin Handle Art Deco Woman, Gazelles

Description: Beautiful vintage early-1940s Loose-Wiles biscuit tin with a curved basket-type handle, featuring very Art Deco lithography of a woman feeding a piece of fruit to two gazelles or stylized deer. This tin practically screams Art Deco: from the woman’s face, hair, clothes and languid position, to the trees and metal railing in the background, even to the horns on the gazelles. The green color gradation on the sides is the very definition of “ombré”, which means “shaded” in French, and there is also a lovely scrolling pattern on the sides of the lid - both of which also contribute to the Art Deco-ness of the tin. Hard to believe this large round tin with a 10” diameter and a height of 3.5” once held three pounds of cookies! The tin and its contents were made in the USA in New York, New York by the Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company, “the Baker of Sunshine Biscuits” as per the embossed logo on the bottom of the tin, which is a lovely gold color as is the interior (see below for more info on Loose-Wiles if interested.) This particular tin is in very good condition, with lovely colors that seem like a pastel drawing or watercolor painting, and which have been further softened by age. As it is a vintage tin it has age wear, scratches, edge wear, some tiny dings, small spots of discoloration, and some small bits of missing paint. There is a cluster of dents and associated areas of missing paint on the bottom of the lid, located mostly within the skirt of the woman, though otherwise structurally the tin and handle are in excellent shape. There are a few paint splotches on the side of the tin, scratches on the underside of the lid and exterior bottom, and a cluster of surface-rust spots on the interior bottom over the embossed letter reverse, though the remainder of the inside is shiny, bright and free of rust. Please examine all pictures closely in order to fully assess for yourself the condition of this tin. Measurements are: diameter 10.5”/27cm, height to top of tin 3.5”/9cm, height with the handle raised 7.5”/19cm, width of handle 0.5”/1.2cm, weight 1 lb 4oz. I believe every tin is a work of art, and this Art Deco masterpiece would add beauty and elegance to any vintage tin collection! Pkg 2lbs 10oz 16,15,7 Loose-Wiles Biscuit Co - Joseph Loose was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Biscuit Company, which later became Nabisco. In 1902 he decided to leave NBC in order to form his own biscuit company with his brother Jacob and another man, John Wiles. The Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company was also known as the Bakers of Sunshine Biscuits, but they didn’t have that as a registered trademark until 1946 when they officially became Sunshine Biscuit Inc. - this caused them no end of problems with other companies who thought the word “Sunshine” was a bright and cheery name to pick for their own companies. They originally established Loose-Wiles in Kansas City, MO, but soon expanded to Boston, and then New York. In 1912 Loose-Wiles opened what would become a famous building known as the “Thousand Window Bakery” in Long Island, NY, at that time the largest bakery in the world. It held that title until 1955, baking such products as Hydrox chocolate cream sandwich cookies, Animal Crackers, and Cheez-Its. In 1965 the American Tobacco Company purchased the brand and moved primary production to Sayreville, NJ, but continued with the name Sunshine Biscuits and made all its products. In 1996 Keebler bought it but still made some products under the brand; however, after Kellogg’s purchased Keebler in 2001 they fully retired the Sunshine Biscuit brand (though they kept Cheez-Its, of course.)
