Description: Vintage 1940's Photo 16"x 20" Cities Service Company Oil Tanker Ship Photo from the Cities Service Oil Co. archives, professionally re-printed in 1993 for a Division Headquarters building. 16" x 20" metal framed photo on foam board back with Glass The Bradford Island Oil Tanker was built for Cities Service in 1945 carrying 10,500 tons, approximately 75,000 bbl of crude oil. Built by Kaiser Co in Portland Oregon, named for the Bradford Island on the Columbia River Oregon. The tanker is adorned on the stern with the Cities Service "Expanding Triangle" logo that was used from from 1928 until 1965 when the logo was replaced with the CITGO triangle logo. The tanker was converted to a LNG tanker in 1970 and renamed the "Concho" and was scraped in the early 2000's. Cities Service was a major player in the war effort of the United States, with the company’s subsidiaries producing half of the oil used by the Allies in the final year of World War I. By the end of World War II, Cities Service oil tankers aided efforts delivering 32 million barrels of oil to military forces around the globe. Background on Cities Service and origins of the Photo: Cities Service was a major oil company formed in 1910 with major petroleum distribution and utilites in the East and oil production in the Midwest. Cities Service Corporate Headquarters moved from NY, NY to Tulsa, OK in 1968. My husband went to work as an engineer for Cities Service in 1975. Occidental Petroleum acquired Cities Service in 1982 and promptly began selling off assets. The Gas Liquids division was sold in 1993 and formed as company named Trident NGL in The Woodlands, TX. Almost all employees and executives came from Cities Service. The office decor of Trident featured numerous vintage photos from the Cities Service archives that were professionally reprinted and displayed in Trident's headquarter corridors. Trident was subsequently sold to the NGC Corp. in 1994 and consolidated with NGC's office in Houston. The vintage Cities Service photo decor collection was given to employees upon office closure when I acquired this picture. As a historical footnote, CITGO which was the US refining and retail marketing side of Cities Service pioneered the concept of the convenience stores in the 1970's. CITGO was ultimately sold and headquarters moved to Houston, now owned by Venezuela with a 49% stake by Russia with a very checkered story over the past 40 years. This info on Cities Service from the from the University of Tulsa Cities Service Foundation on the internet: Cities Service Company was founded in 1910 by Henry Latham Doherty. The company would ultimately become today’s Citgo. By 1918, Cities Service was active in nine Oklahoma oil fields, and it was operating seven oil refineries, five of which were in Oklahoma. It was also a major player in the war effort of the United States, with the company’s subsidiaries producing half of the oil used by the Allies in the final year of World War I. During the 1920s Cities Service found three of the five pools that comprised the Greater Seminole Oil Field. In 1928, one of the company’s many subsidiaries, the Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Company, discovered the soon-to-be famous Oklahoma City Oil Field. As a result of this exploration and other successes, Cities Service became a well-known and influential company in the United States and across the world. By the end of World War II, Cities Service oil tankers aided efforts delivering 32 million barrels of oil to military forces around the globe. The Public Utilities Holding Company Act of 1935 forced the company to choose between owning public utility companies and owning oil and gas ventures. In 1940, Cities Service chose to retain its lucrative oil and gas business, therefore beginning the process of divesting itself of public utilities. During the 1940s and 1950s, the company sold more than two hundred public utility companies in order to comply with the 1935 rule. See Photos for Complete Description and Condition.
