His book, Etching and Etchers (1866) became a standard work on the subject, and established him as one of the leading art critics of his day. In 1870, he founded The Portfolio, a monthly periodical, each number of which consisted of a monograph upon some artist or group of artists. In 1882 he issued The Graphic Arts (the source of this print), a finely illustrated work on the technique of the great masters of various arts and printing, containing lithographs & photogravures of fine illustrated works of the past. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources.
