The specimen started out as rhombohedral calcite crystals. As the crystals grew, particularly towards the end of growth, magnesium began substituting for the calcium in calcite, leading to crystals with a rhombohedral shape, but a rippled surface. The specimens from this find are fascinating, and this one is a great example!
