Description: This is a stylish late Victorian Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with its Blue Glass Liner. The pot is drum shaped with swirling flowers and foliage engraved on the front and sides of the body around a central blank cartouche. The lid also has a rim of engraved decoration and a fleur-de-lys thumb rest. The mustard pot was made in Birmingham by Thomas Hayes and dates to 1900, the last full year of Queen Victoria's long reign. Thomas Hayes registered his first mark at Birmingham’s assay office in 1887 and operated from premises in Spencer Street in the Jewellery Quarter. The firm was also registered in Chester. He produced a wide range of tableware, homeware and personal items. The company remained in business, latterly as T Hayes & Co, up until around 1910. Condition is very good, with just a couple of tiny dings in the bottom rim and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of use. The glass liner fits snugly and has a couple of little nibbles in the top rim but remains perfectly usable. Please make sure to view all the photographs as these form part of the description. The mustard pot is 6.6cm / 2.6ins from rim to handle, 4.7cm / 1.8ins in diameter and stands 6cm / 2.3ins high. Without the glass liner it weighs in at a very respectable 54.6g / 1.9oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 122.1g / 4.3oz. The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter a for 1900 and the T.H makers' mark for Thomas Hayes.
