Description: This is a stunning, striking Victorian Papier Mache plate or tray, circa 1870.With scalloped edges, divided by shaped floral panels, one is drawn into the wonderful scene of a turbulent sea, a rocky coast, a formidable castle and a moored boat with its sail. The turquoise sea with its active waives, is in contrast to the blue, clouded sky. The castle is most likely to be Scottish, guarding the coast. The oil painted scene is encircled by bits of abalone shell inlaid into the papier mache plate. And further abalone shell has been inlaid throughout the plate for decorative effect. There are four colourful floral panels, one with carnations against a cream background, one with Japanese cherry blossoms against a pink background, another with blue cornflowers on a yellow background, a silvery background shows pink anemones, and a striped background has yellow Michaelmas daisies. There is also a swirl of a golden panel with swallows flying above. The entire impression is one of absolute charm, all set against the black an gold lacquer of the papier mache plate. The plate is in excellent condition, with a bit of repair on the pink panel. But most papier mache has wear and tear, as it is fairly delicate material. There are no crack or chips otherwise. This is a highly decorative plate which would look wonderful on a wall or table. The plate measures 10 ¼”(26.5 cm) in diameter.
