Wilmer David “Vinegar Bend” Mizell (August 13, 1930 - February 21, 1999) was a left-handed pitcher who spent nine seasons in Major League Baseball before turning to politics and serving three terms (1969-1975) as a member of the United States House of Representatives from North Carolina. The St. Louis Cardinals signed Mizell (whose nickname was a nod to his Alabama hometown) as an amateur free agent in 1949. Debuting with the Cards three years later (1952-1953, 1956-1960), Wilmer went 10-8 his rookie year and 13-11 his sophomore season before serving two years in the United States Army. Mizell concluded his playing days as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates (1960-1962) and the New York Mets (1962) before retiring having pitched in 268 games (including 230 starts) with a 90-88 record, a 3.85 ERA, and 918 strikeouts. He also pitched 61 complete games and 15 shutouts. After being unseated as a representative, “Vinegar Bend” served under President Gerald R. Ford as assistant secretary of commerce for economic development.
