Description: Rare opportunity for an original piece of Neon Art by world renowned artist Lili Lakich The neon sculpture "Vacancy - No Vacancy" was produced in a very limited number of 9 - this particular piece with an aluminium frame was one of the first ones. Other sculptures like this are currently found in Tokyo as well as Paris. Liliana Diane Lakich (born June 4, 1944) is an American artist, best known for her work in neon sculpture. As a child, she had been fascinated by neon advertising, and she built her career around illuminated art, with its special emotional power. Lakich has received many private and public art commissions, in one case assisting the City of Los Angeles in a street-lighting project. She also co-founded the Museum of Neon Art (MONA), the first specialist collection of art in electric media. Her sculptures have been featured in major publications on contemporary sculpture. Vacancy/No Vacancy was created as a commissioned work for Marion Rothman, a successful film editor working in Hollywood. Rothman was an attractive woman, twelve years older than Lakich, who had a beautiful home with a swimming pool. Within her circle of friends, who came to swim, she was known for her lovely breasts, which she would show off around her pool. Lakich photographed her nude and drew her upper torso in cobalt blue neon, which she mounted on stainless steel. Above the body are words common to motel signs - "NO VACANCY". Lakich attached the word NO to a separate transformer and animator, which are controlled by a switch. When turned on, the word blinks on and off and advertise a vacancy in her love life. The specific piece listed her has the torso in red color, the NO is in orange/yellow and the VACANCY in violet/purple. The piece measures approximately 31 inches by 27 inches by 8 inches and is in excellent condition. We are willing to deliver the item free of charge within a range of 200 miles from Sacramento, California. Otherwise, please contact us for shipping options.
