Description: Rare Antique Padded Leather Small GEM SIZE TINTYPE Photo Album, Containing Tiny Civil War/Victorian Gem Size Photos. MANY IDENTIFIED WITH NAMES AND MANY ALSO LISTED AS "DEAD"DESCRIPTION: This is a nice example of a classic original small Antebellum/Civil War/Victorian period gem size tintype photo album. Gem size albums were often used by children for friends or school mates or family, etc., sort of a 1850 version of the modern school yearbook. This one is a great piece for your collection of albums as is, or it can be used to put your own period gem size tintype photos in if desired. This is a nice standard size gem album, containing 12 pages (with photos on each side), providing room for 4 standard gem size tintype photos per page......a total capacity of 48 gems. This album contains 20 gems, or almost 50% full.Has the owner's name Emma written in the front in pencil!! MOST OF THE PHOTOS ALSO HAVE PENCILLED NAME IDENTIFICATION, WHICH IS EXTREMELY UNUSUAL!! One shows "Mama, aged 19", WHICH IS REALLY NICE!! 12 of the photos also have "Dead" handwritten next to them and one has the date 1912 as well. I believe that a person from a younger generation went through in 1912 and noted all the people that had died since the album was started 50 years before. I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH AN ALBUM WITH SUCH PERSONALIZATION.The album has a NICE RED/GOLD LEATHER EMBOSSED PATTERN ON THE FRONT & BACK COVERS, gold photo trimmed pages, and the original brass hinge (usually these are missing!).
