Description: Up for sale is a great, colored, antique map of "VENEZUELA, NEW GRANADA AND ECUADOR". 1856 NEW GRANADA is now known as COLOMBIA. The Republic of New Granada, with its capital at Bogotá, lasted from 1831 to 1856. The name "Colombia" reappeared in the "United States of Colombia"; the new name for the country having been introduced by a liberal government after a civil war. The use of the term "New Granada" only survived in conservative circles, such as among ecclesiastics. This map is one page and measures approximately 15 x 18 inches, including the border area. The map has fantastic coloring to it. This map is from "COLTON'S ATLAS OF THE WORLD - Illustrating Physical And Political Geography" by George Woolworth Colton. Published in 1856 by J. H. Colton And Company, New York. These maps exhibited true representations of all works of internal improvement, completed and projected at the time, such as the lines of railroads, canals, and other means of intercommunication; of the public surveys made under the authority of the States and Governments; of the routes of travelers in the less explored parts of the earth; and also a great mass of other pertinent information valuable to all who are interested in the development of the countries delineated, or in the progress of civilization and industry. Interesting Notes about the Map: New Granada is now Colombia (in 1856 - probably just after the publication of this map). The map is generally in Very Good condition (not perfect but very nice). Light browning, and some small tears at the edges. Heavier browning along the edges. Also, some minor spotting. The map is blank on the reverse side. There is tear across the top edge from when it was detached from the Atlas it was originally bound in. There are some creases in the paper, but they do not appear to affect the map, as well as some other small stains here and there. A few tears and nicks along the edges, but they do not affect the map. Other dings here and there, as well.
