Description: Very Large Original Drawing by Gordon Hope Grant N.A. The Whale Hunt Very Large Original Drawing by Gordon Hope Grant N.A. The Whale Hunt Click images to enlarge Description Large Original Drawing by Gordon Hope Grant N.A. The Whale Hunt Offered here is a very large and rare marine drawing by National Academician Gordon Hope Grant. It's the largest drawing by Grant that I am aware of, at 24" by 38" sight, on 26" by 40" paper. The medium looks like charcoal but is less textured and probably lithograph crayon. The work is dated 1946. Grant was elected ANA in 1942 and NA in 1947. It is similar in subject to his much later 10" by 13" lithograph "The Whale Hunt", although the ship direction is reversed in the lithograph and the drawing size is about 4 times larger than the largest print version. The exceptionally large size allowed Grant to show us an unusual amount of detail. Look particularly at the sails, rigging, and lifeboats in the close up of the ship. The drawing is single matted and presented in a simple black frame, protected under acrylic. It is signed lower right "Gordon Grant 1946" and inscribed to the recipient of the gifted work. The condition is very good for the age. There is a single break in the paper at the waterline about 3" from the image left edge. It's repaired on the reverse with acid free manuscript tape and not noticeable unless you look for it. You probably won't see another Grant like this. ArtPrice has very extensive auction records and shows only one drawing "After the Match" of similar size. We are offering at a reasonable firm level. There will be no price reductions but increases of 3% to 5% per year may occur. Returns are accepted only in case of misrepresentation but our guarantee of authenticity is without time limit. In 1899 he covered the Boer War in South Africa for Harper ’s, and from 1901-09, he illustrated for Puck. It was during the 1920s that his focus on naval and marine scenes began to win him wide recognition.Author/illustrator: "Ships Under Sail," 1941; "The Secret Voyage," 1943; and other marine stories.
