The museum has over 40,000 objects, rare books, archives and manuscripts and houses the largest public collection of paintings by the great American folk artist Grandma Moses. Grandma Moses did not start painting until she was 75 years old. She gained the nickname “Grandma Moses” from a reviewer at New York’s Herald Tribune. Her paintings, with their nostalgic charm, became immensely popular. She exhibited her work internationally into her 90's and continued to paint until a few months before her death at age 101.
