Out of the Ellenberger-Ziener partnership soon came the Vauen make itself, which grew to become Germany’s largest and most enduring pipe brand – a title that it continues to hold to this day. This particular Vauen is far more traditional than the make’s contemporary output. Rather than the avant-garde and experimental designs Vauen is known for today, it is a classic brandy shape, to which a pair of brass have been added for an extra touch of elegance. Interestingly, this Vauen has a P-lip style stem, though if you’re familiar with the history of Vauen pipes, as well as other makes in the 20th century (Hilson, Savinelli, etc.), you’ll know that Peterson’s P-lip was emulated by a good number of other pipe companies. This isn’t a bad thing, either – they certainly help with tongue bite, to my mind. This Vauen is completely unsmoked, with a factory-original bowl coating to help ease in its first smokes. It also comes with its original sleeve. There are one or two small worn out fills in the finish, but these imperfections are purely cosmetic. The grain is otherwise very nice. As with most Vauen pipes, it is chambered for 9mm filters, such as Vauen’s own or Savinelli’s balsa filters. It should also accommodate some variety of adapter for non-filter use, if the user prefers.
