Description: In the May 1902 American Engineer and Railroad Journal, there was an article about the 100 steel truss 36 foot box cars being built for the Norfolk & Western, two years after steel framed gons (April 1900, AE&RJ) and a year after steel-framed hoppers (February 1901, same magazine). Seley's designs used channels for the diagonals. Several years later, Seley was working for the Rock Island, and in the June 1906 AE&RJ, there were plans of 40 foot box cars which had become standard for the Rock Island, while a similar design was described as standard on the Frisco. Both the N&W and Rock Island used the Howe truss pattern. A Howe truss is the norm for wood bridges, since it puts the diagonals in compression, as wood is much weaker in tension. However, steel is stronger in tension, so the use of a Howe truss was a throwback to wood car design. In a Howe truss, the diagonals point to the top of the door. Both of the Seley box cars were double-sheathed. The only clue that anything was out of the ordinary with these cars was that there would have been no fishbelly underframe. With the onset of World War I, the United States Railroad Administration (USRA) was faced with the possible shortage of raw materials to construct desperately needed rolling stock. In an effort to decrease construction time, provide a cost savings and simplify repair and parts supply, a group of seven standard freight car designs were created that could be built in large quantities. The Virginian RR did have composite hopper cars built but not any Boxcars under the USRA Rule. But the Virginian did however have two single-car classes of boxcar, that were unusual. Box car # VGN 61550 was an actual 40-ton wooden boxcar with steel ends and was class BX-13. The car was originally built for the Louisville & Nashville as L&N 11613 and was destroyed by fire in 1941 while on Virginian property. Virginian found itself in need of additional boxcars so they had it rebuilt in April 1942 again with wood sheathing and renumbered as 61550 and was still listed in the as being in use as late as 1956.
