Description: USS WEST VIRGINIA BB-48 Memorial Naval first day cover with postmark from Wheeling, WV dated June 20, 1963. Color printed photo cachet #2463 by Alvin Eckert USCS #9964. Cover franked with two 5 cent West Virginia 100th stamps # 1232 (FDOI). The cover was prepared on a gummed, archive quality envelope. This proud 624 foot Colorado Class battleship was commissioned on December 1, 1923 and shortly thereafter she ran aground on June 16, 1924 on Hampton Roads with no hull damage. She was ordered to the Pacific in 1939 and was berthed on Battleship Row on the fateful Sunday morning. She was heavily damaged by seven torpedo hits and several bombs. She sank upright and was not re-floated until May 17, 1942. She was rebuilt at Puget Sound Shipyard and rejoined the Pacific Fleet in the Fall of 1944, in time to participate in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. She was among the battleships that crossed the "T" and destroyed the enemy fleet on October 24th. The fine fighting ship earned five battle stars in WW II, including the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. She was present in San Diego for Navy Day 1945, but spent her remaining years in reserve, until scrapped in 1959. Seller has over 80 different covers for USN ships attacked at Pearl Harbor in 1941.
