Description: USS CHEW DD-106 Naval cover for the destroyer that was moored in port, her crew fired the 3 inch guns and small arms at enemy planes during the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Cover postmarked on June 14, 2024 at Keystone, SD. Blue photo of the USS Chew on cachet #3128 by Alvin Eckert, USCS #9964. Cover franked with a 55 cent USS Missouri stamp # 5392 and a 73 cent flag coil stamp # 5875 (FDOI) The cover was prepared on a un-gummed envelope. This 314 foot Wickes Class destroyer was built in San Francisco, CA and commissioned in 1918. The vessel was recommissioned in 1940 and she earned one WW II battle stars for Pacific Theater. This older destroyer was kept in the eastern Pacific, for escort duty, for the remainder of the war. She was decommissioned on 15 October 1945 and sold for recycling into scrap metal in 1946.
