Haruna in Gunma Prefecture, Usaburo Kokeshi Co. is one of the largest kokeshi kiosks in Japan, with a kokeshi manufacturing factory, a crafts museum displaying many kokeshi creations, and a store. Around 1950, Usaburo I started making kokeshi dolls in Shibukawa, and moved to the current location in 1979. Unsaburo Kokeshi dolls are characterized by the use of chestnut, cherry, and zelkova wood with beautiful grain, in addition to the more commonly used mizuki wood. The face is made of mizuki wood, the hair is made of chestnut wood, and the body is made of cherry wood, depending on the design of the kokeshi.In 1961, the first Gunma Kokeshi Doll Contest was held, where design development and technical skills were competed. Unasaburo Kokeshi also entered the competition every year, putting its heart and soul into each stroke of the kokeshi sword, and winning many awards at the All Japan Kokeshi Contest.Several years ago, in an effort to attract not only the elderly but also the young, the company began producing kokeshi dolls with cute characters.
