Description: This is a very nice collection of mid-1960s space exploration memorabilia! In August of 1965, NASA launched a new mission of the Gemini program. Gemini 5 had astronauts Pete Conrad and Gordon Cooper on board, and made 120 orbits of the Earth. Cooper and Conrad accomplished the first-ever week-long space flight, which gave valuable information on the effect of space on the astronauts. The capsule remained aloft for eight days and splashed down in the Atlantic on August 29, 1965, where it was recovered by the USS Lake Champlain. This is a collection of 5 covers, one from each of 5 ships that supported the mission. All ships (USS New, USS Neosho, USS Lake Champlain, USS DuPont, and USS James C. Owens) were in the Atlantic. All were cancelled on shipboard on August 29, 1965, and all are cacheted with the "US Navy Recovery Force" design. Check the scans for details.
