Description: Here is an attractive and desirable lot of the first day covers (all cacheted, all unaddressed) of all 20 US stamp issues of 1963. The most important feature of the US stamp program of 1963 was the increase in postal rates that took effect at the start of the year. Beginning on January 1, 1963, the cost of mailing a first class letter increased from four cents to five. The year saw several important centennials, including those of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Emancipation Proclamation, city mail delivery, the Red Cross, and West Virginia's statehood. Postal history was made on August 1, 1963, when the eight-cent air mail stamp (which was introduced the year before) was released with luminescent tagging as an aid to sorting mail electronically. This was the first "tagged" stamp in US postal history, and while not really a "first day of issue," covers were stamped with a special "first day of use" cancellation. That historic cover is included in this collection. In all, this collection contains all 20 US stamp issues for 1963. They are: 1/9/1963 Scott 1208 5¢ Flag Over White House 3/22/1963 Scott 1209 1¢ Andrew Jackson 4/6/1963 Scott 1230 5¢ Carolina Charter 5/3/1963 Scott C66 15¢ Montgomery Blair Air Mail 5/31/1963 Scott 1225 1¢ Andrew Jackson (coil) 6/4/1963 Scott 1231 5¢ Food for Peace 6/20/1963 Scott 1232 5¢ West Virginia Statehood 7/1/1963 Scott 1180 5¢ Gettysburg 7/12/1963 Scott C67 6¢ Bald Eagle Air Mail Stamp 7/24/1963 Scott C68 8¢ Amelia Earhart Air Mail 8/1/1963 Scott C64a 8¢ Air Mail Stamp with luminescent tagging 8/16/1963 Scott 1233 5¢ Emancipation Proclamation 8/17/1963 Scott 1234 5¢ Alliance for Progress 10/5/1963 Scott 1235 5¢ Cordell Hull 10/11/1963 Scott 1236 5¢ Eleanor Roosevelt 10/14/1963 Scott 1237 5¢ The Sciences 10/26/1963 Scott 1238 5¢ Letter Delivery 10/29/1963 Scott 1239 5¢ International Red Cross 11/1/1963 Scott 1240 5¢ Christmas 12/7/1963 Scott 1241 5¢ "Columbia Jays" by Audubon All 20 covers are clean, fresh, and unaddressed.
