Description: VINTAGE US MILITARY UNIT PATCH FROM PINE GAP, NORTHERN TERRITORY, AUSTRALIA 1961 - 1968 PERIOD. UNITED STATES NAVY OCCUPATIONAL RATING - DATA SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN 1961-1998 - SOUVENIR OF OPERATION BUFFALO A 5 cm x 5 cm embroidered cloth woven patch. Worn on the upper sleeve as a square the design is of a helium atom with input/output arrows. This rare patch represents the United States Navy occupational rating of Data Systems Technician (abbreviated as DS). This was a designation given by the US Bureau of Naval Personnel (BUPERS) to enlist members who completed satisfactorily initial data systems technician 'A' school training. The primary training location for the DS rating was Combat System Technical Schools Command,(CSTSC) at Mare Island Vallejo, California. The rating was established in 1961 and was later merged into the electronics technician and fire controlman ratings on 1 October 1998. Condition: This distinguishing unit patch is in issued condition showing evidence of service wear. The patch has been displayed on a RAAF serviceman's memorabilia board at some point, old double sided sticky tape present. The pictures refer. No medals nor badges.
