These railroads: * Los Angeles & Salt Lake * Western Pacific Railway * Oregon Short Line * Oregon-Washington Railroad and Navigational Lines * Utah & Northern all made up the railroads that the Union Pacific acquired over the years to gain access to the West Coast and Pacific Northwest. In Chapter 1, we will cross the barren Black Rock and Escalente Deserts of Southern Utah and down the magnificent canyons of Clover and Meadow Valley Wash in Nevada, west of Las Vegas. Then we go back across the high desert of the Mojave and through the San Bernardino Mountains and Cajon Pass. In Chapter 2, we forge across the salt flats of the Great Salt Lake, over the Pequop Range of eastern Nevada and along the Humboldt River to Winnemucca. From here, we go northwest across the desolate Smoke Creek Desert and down Sand Pass to eastern California. If that’s the worst we travel, then the best is just ahead as we follow the scenic Feather River Canyon into the valleys and Coastal Range of northern California. Chapter 3 takes us north of Ogden, Utah, across Mormon farming land and west of Granger, finds us in remote sections of western Wyoming and southeastern Idaho. Both rail lines merge near Pocatello and then it’s the long and winding journey along the Snake River in Southern Idaho. In Oregon, we encounter the Blue Mountains and the Columbia River Gorge before heading north to Puget Sound and Seattle. Chapter 4 covers Union Pacific’s Montana Division down from Silver Bow, Montana and across the Continental Divide back into eastern Idaho, a side of the Union Pacific seldom seen. This book is a contemporary photographic journey along the Union Pacific Railroad from west of Ogden, Utah to Southern California, Northern California (Western Pacific Route) and to the Pacific Northwest and Montana. Includes b&w photographs that spans an era of over 20 years. Contents: Maps Los Angeles and Salt Lake (Salt Lake City to L.A.)
