Description: Performer Notes: On the heels of a 2003 independent documentary of the same name, Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto entered the North American market with their debut album for the Smithsonian Folkways label. UN FUEGO DE SANGRE PURA is Colombian gaitero music (a form of the traditional cumbia style of Latin music) in its purest form: three percussionists, including two drummers and a maracas player, support a pair of lead instrumentalists playing the gaita, a traditional Colombian wooden flute. Out of this simple instrumental lineup, the five players manage to create a hypnotic blend of polyrhythms and countermelodies. While some Colombian pop artists, such as Carlos Vives, have incorporated gaitero influences into a pop framework, UN FUEGO DE SANGRE PURA is the real deal.
