Born in Zaporozhye, he studied at the Zaporizhzhya Pedagogical Institute (1937-1939) and completed literary studies at the Writers' Union in Kyiv. During WWII Ivan was forcibly taken to Germany. Subsequently, he was in a displaced persons camp in Ingolstadt, where he participated in literature life and published his works in diaspora press, such as Pu-Gu magazine (Augsburg, Austria, 1947-49). In 1947 he moved to the US, working in factories in the states of Texas and California. In 1957 he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. Manilo lived in Philadelphia, where he founded the publishing house "Svit". He died in 1976 in Wineland, New Jersey, USA, buried there.Iar Slavutych (Hryhoriy Zhuchenko, 1918-2011) - Ukrainian poet, translator. In the aftermath of WWII lived in a displaced persons camp in Germany, then moved to the USA; since 1960 lived in Canada, where he became a Professor at the University of Alberta. He is the author of many English-language textbooks on the Ukrainian language, literary-critical essays, editor and publisher of the literary and art almanac "Northern Lights" (Edmonton). Member of the Ukrainian Writers' Association "Word".Alexander Granovsky - Ukrainian American entomologist, also an activist and poet, Granovsky was born in Berezhtsi, Ukraine, and came to the United States in 1913. He was educated at Colorado State Agricultural College and the University of Wisconsin, and taught entomology at the universities of Wisconsin and Minnesota. He became a leader in the Ukrainian American community locally and nationally and was president of the Organization for the Rebirth of Ukraine, Inc. (ODWU). In St. Paul, Minnesota, he was also an active member of St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Following World War II, he was active in resettlement of Ukrainian refugees.
