Description: 56.04 U.K. Supermarine Spitfire Mk. IX, 1/72 scale Airfix kit 02081, (2), NIB factory sealed The Supermarine Spitfire was a British single-seat fighter used by the Royal Air Force during World War II. It was produced in greater numbers than any other Allied design. It was the only Allied fighter in production at the outbreak of the Second World War that was still in production at the end of the war. The Spitfire was designed in the Supermarine subsidiary of Vickers-Armstrongs by the company’s Chief Designer R. J. Mitchell who passed away in 1937. The design of the Spitfire started in 1930 with the Air Ministry specification F7/30 with the Type 224. This progressed in 1934 with the Type 300 which received £10,000 for the construction of the improved design. Specification F.10/35 was written around the design. After several design changes and refinements the prototype Spitfire flew on 5 March 1936. This was just four months after the first flight of the Hawker Hurricane. The Air Ministry placed an order for 310 Spitfires on 3 June 1936, but the first production aircraft didn’t come off the line until mid-1938. The Spitfire entered service with 19 Squadron at RAF Duxford on 4 August 1938. The Spitfire reached legendary status during the Battle of Britain in the late summer of 1940. The type had been withheld from the Battle of France to preserve them for the defense of England. The British Commander used the excellent tactic of using the less numerous to engage the German fighters and the Hawker Hurricane to attack the bombers. Although there were many exceptions to this general plan, it work well and made the German losses so high that they were forced to resort to night attacks after a month of daytime fighting. The Spitfire served for the remainder of the war although its limited range reduced its effectiveness as a bomber escort. There were 24 marks of Spitfires produced. The engines progressed from the Merlin to the Griffin. Different wings were fitted to most of the marks: the A wing had eight .303 machine guns, the B wing had four .303 machine guns and two 20 mm Hispano cannons, the C or Universal wing could have either four 20 mm cannon or two 20 mm cannon and four .303 machine guns, and the final configuration was the E wing with two 20 mm cannon and two .50 inch Browning heavy machine guns. The Spitfire Mk V was the most produced variant with 6,487 produced and the second most common was the Mk IX with 5,656 built. The Mk XVI was a variation of the Mk IX with a low-rated Packard built Merlin 266 and an enlarged vertical tail. The Mk XVI was the last production model with a Merlin engine and 1,054 were built. A total of 20,351 Spitfires were produced in all of the variants. Please, let us know if you need the item for a special event or by a specific date and we will assist in meeting your schedule. Remember that first class and priority mail takes 2 or 3 days, and parcel post or media mail takes 6 to 10 days. Express mail can be done overnight if everything comes together and second day if it doesn’t. Please E-mail us if you have any questions We have been advised by the US Post Office that shipping anything to South America is risky and there is a good possibility that the item will end up on the black market. They recommend that the package be shipped with a “return receipt” and that gives the best chance of the item arriving. A Note on our Shipping and Handling. Our shipping and handling (S&H) is based on the size and weight of the item plus an estimation of the weight of the packing materials. This gives us the amount the USPS will charge to ship the item, we then add two or three dollars to cover the purchase of boxes, packing material and our time and mileage to pack and ship the item. This means that while we may charge you $9.00 for S&H the price that you see on the postage when it arrives will likely be 6 or 7 dollars. It doesn’t mean that we’re trying to scam you or otherwise take advantage, it’s just what it takes to cover our costs in running this store. We do customize S&H charges for multiple item shipments based on the combined weight and size of the items plus weight and cost of the box, an estimation of the weight of packing materials, and $1 for each item to cover the packing materials and the drive to the Post Office. In order to do this takes a bit of time so please give us five (5) business days to ship your item. If we run into any additional delays we will let you know just as soon as we can.
