The first issues did not have the word CENTS on the coin, just a large letter V. Some of the no-cents coins were gold plated and were passed as $5 gold pieces until later in the year the word CENTS was added. Designed by Charles E. Barber, who also designed the popular Barber Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar designs.
