Description: This pestle shaped ceramic figure has legitimate wear on the bottom grinding surface, but considering it is made of clay whatever was intended to grind had to be relatively soft, perhaps native medicines, soft seeds? I have not found a similar pestle searching the internet, but a couple clues might help. Note the hair style, knobby, perhaps a hat. The figure holds his hands across his chest, perhaps in pain or supplication, or is he deceased? There are rectangular shapes on the body, looking a bit like South American iconography. Was this intended to be a Shaman, or someone ill? It has the vertical opening separating the legs. It measures approx 6" H. and weighs approx 14 oz. It had been part of an ethnographic collection gathered by a doctor that included African, Central and South American items. (The elderly collector is not in condition to assist in such determinations.)
