Description: Up for sale is a copy of Computing Tables and Formulas by E. H. Barker, owned and inscribed by Alice Ambrose. The writing reads: “Alice Ambrose / Freshman J.M.U. / Trigonometry / Dec. 2, 1924”. JMU is James Millikin University, now known as Millikin University, in Decatur, IL. I found this book in an antiquarian bookstore in western Massachusetts, near where Ambrose lived in her later life. My favorite part of this book is the included note, which reads: “The Mathematics Club will hold its second regular meeting Wednesday Feb. 10. Members and all those who are interested are asked to be present.” I’ve included two screenshots of the Decaturian (JMU student newspaper—can be searched online) that reference Alice Ambrose and the Mathematics Club. This is your chance to own a book owned by a budding 18-year-old genius (of course it’s noteworthy that Ambrose was a student of Wittgenstein, but she was surely a philosopher and logician in her own right). Here’s a truncated biography of Alice Ambrose, taken from the Smith College archives, which holds many of her writings (and hosts a fuller biography): “Alice Ambrose Lazerowitz was born to Albert Lee and Bonnie Belle Ambrose on November 25, 1906, in Lexington, IL. She attended Millikin University as an undergraduate (1924-1928), and received her Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin in 1932. In 1932, she traveled to England to do post-doctoral research at Cambridge University, studying under Ludwig Wittgenstein.” Free shipping to the 50 US states.
