It is believed these spirits guard your home, ward off evil spirits, and bring protection, prosperity, good health, good luck and happiness. European legends of the Tree Spirit talk about villagers who hunted and travelled through the forests. They believed that the tree spirits were good, wise, powerful and would protect them from evil. To assure their safety and appease the spirits, the villagers would carve tree spirit images on pieces of wood and bark and walking sticks. When they would venture into the forest, they would knock on the tree to awaken the sleeping spirit to protect them. This is where we get the saying "Knock on Wood" or "Touch Wood." Tradition tells us that the Wood Spirit is hidden in the wood and just waiting to be released by the wood carver. The carver uses the natural form of the wood to present the face they see imbedded in the grain of the wood, then the artist works to set it free.
