Description: Chateaubriand, F.A. De. Travels in Greece, Palestine, Egypt, and Barbary during the years 1806 and 1807. Translated from the French by F. Shoberl. Embellished with a map, and three copper and four wood engravings. New York: Van Winkle and Wiley, 1814. Rare antiquarian book, including illustrations and text about what would become the Jewish State today. Extra illustrated with a tipped-in "New Map of Greece" in addition to all of the illustrations, plan and map originally called for. While the gold tooled leather binding is present, it is worn with losses on all of the edges and with the front board and flyleaf detached. The body of the text is in good vintage condition for its age, with the signature of Abel L. Anderson on the free front flyleaf, pencil markings p. 179, slight marginal staining through-out and one loss of paper in margins not affecting text or illustrations and foxing and discoloration to the text block through-out. Front matter and text 471 numbered pages, Appendix and Index 46 numbered pages. The book includes passages set in Greek type. Despite the damages noted this is still a highly desirable copy well worth rebinding for an important volume not often found with all maps and plates not only present, but in such good condition for age and use! The book calls for eight illustrations (plates, a plan and a map) as indicated on the title page; however, this copy is “extra-illustrated” with the addition of a further fold-out map of Greece, as follows:A Map as Adapted to these Travels form D’Anvilles Froisieme Partie de la Carle D’Europe published in Paris in 1760, unfolds to ca 17” x 17”, paper splits in center where folds meet, 2” tears to top and bottom of the tabs which mount this oversize map to the book and slightly intrude into the plate all of which is present, opposite p. 53A New Map of Greece with frontier line printed in red (map is in black), unfolds to ca 15” x 15”, paper split in center where folds meet, but all present, opposite p. 182.View of Constantinople from the Swedish Minister’s Palace, inserted opposite p. 211.View of Rhodes, with the Entrance to the new, and to the old Harbour, inserted opposite p 223View of Interior view of the Holy Sepulchre, opposite p. 251.View of Grotto at Nazareth, said to have been the house of Joseph and Mary, ½” tear on top margin, opposite p. 252.A New Plan of Jerusalem, unfolds to 7 ½” x 11 ½”, inserted opposite p. 276.View of Holy Sepulchere, as it existed prior to its reparation, A.D. 1555, opposite p. 277.View of Bethlehem to the N.E. with the Monastery containing the Cave of the Nativity to the left, opposite p. 283.
