Description: On June 1, 1986 TWA reinstated service to Honolulu with a non-stop flight from Saint Louis. TWA had previously served Honolulu from Los Angeles in 1969 as part of its round-the-world service, but had ceased operations there in March 1975. Utilizing Boeing 747 equipment which was originally intended to be used on transatlantic service, the flight originated in New York, made a stop in Saint Louis, and flew to Hawaii. The return flight retraced the same route. The cachet used on these covers made reference to the obsolete AM-2. This cover was carried on the inaugural TWA flight from Honolulu, Hawaii to Saint Louis, Missouri (where it was backstamped) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as TW-D106Ea.In January 2001, Trans World Airlines filed for a third and final bankruptcy and was acquired by American Airlines. American Airlines laid off many former TWA employees in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks. TWA continued to exist as an LLC under American Airlines until July 1, 2003 at which time all operations were integrated into American Airlines.
