Description: Totem Pole Carved Painted Wood Artist Initials TM 19.25" Vintage First Nations Description and Item Information Up for sale is this spectacular, large, vintage totem pole carving. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This winged, wooden totem has polychrome painted decoration. This was made from three pieces of wood (body, base, and wings). The wings are held in place with one nail, and they can swivel into a more vertical position (as shown in Photo 8), which is likely how this will be shipped. With the wings in a horizontal position, as shown in Photo 1, the carving measures about 19 1/4 inches tall by 19 inches long by 3 1/4 inches wide. Unpacked, this piece weighs 1 pound 8.9 ounces. This would be a fine addition to a collection of Northwest Coast carvings. Identification This piece has artist initial markings on its back side, as shown, "TM." The exact age of this piece is not known. The work bears some resemblance to Nuu-chah-nulth / Ditidaht Williams family pieces, but I was not able to identify the exact carver. Given the quality of the work, I assume that a collector of this type of item is probably able to identify the artist. Condition This item looks great overall, as shown, with no chips or cracks. It has light wear, with a few minor scuff marks and indents. It is a bit dusty and I did not clean it.
