Description: Three Ferrotypes from late 1800s - early 1900s. Three ferrotype portraits. We believe these were taken around the late 1800s or early 1900s, but it is difficult to be specific. 1. Young man or woman with hair parted at center and rosy cheeks. "Uncle Dan" is written in pencil on the reverse, but on close examination the image looks more like a woman. The image measures about 1.25" in length and 1" in width. The cardboard holder measures about 4.25" x 5.25". There is a label on the reverse: "Taken at the MAMMOTH WAGON. Dougherty & Cope. Photographs, $1.50 Per Doz. Ferrotypes, 75 cts. Per Doz. Taken as well in Cloudy as in Clear weather." 2. Middle-aged man in a suit coat and tie. The image measures about 1.125" x 1.625". The cardboard holder measures about 4.25" x 5.25". "Uncle Dan" is written in pencil on the front. Has a "MAMMOTH WAGON" label on the back. 3. Middle-aged man with suit coat, vest and red tie. There is some damage to the top of the picture. The image measures about 1.25" in length and 1" in width. From the Internet: To produce a ferrotype, a very underexposed negative image was produced on a thin iron plate. It was blackened by painting, lacquering or enamelling, and coated with a collodion photographic emulsion. The dark background gave the resulting image the appearance of a positive. The ability to utilize a very underexposed image meant that a photographer could prepare, expose, develop, and varnish a ferrotype plate in just a few minutes. This, along with the resilience and cheapness of the medium (iron, rather than glass), meant that ferrotypes soon replaced collodion positives as the favorite ‘instant’ process used by itinerant photographers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
