David Garrick (1717 â€" 1779) was an English actor, playwright, theatre manager and producer who influenced nearly all aspects of European theatrical practice throughout the 18th century, and was a pupil and friend of Samuel Johnson He appeared in a number of amateur theatricals, and with his appearance in the title role of Shakespeare's Richard III, audiences and managers began to take notice The Garrick Club in London, named in his honour The author, Thomas Davies (c 1713 â€" 1785) was a Scottish bookseller and author He studied at the University of Edinburgh and was for some years on the stage; he gave up acting and opened a bookshop in Covent Garden It was here that in 1763 he introduced Boswell to Dr Johnson, who was his close friend and to whom he dedicated his edition of the works of Massinger He also wrote this successful Life of Garrick (1780), which had through four editions These two volumes are in full leather, with blindstamped floral design on both cover The once gilt titles on the spines have now faded Both front covers are detached, with the second volume having the first few pages clinging to the detached cover rather than the text block The rear hinges are cracked but holding Both half title pages and the frontis are all present There is some foxing, primarily on the endpapers and first few pages of each volume Minor wear at the corners and spine ends Both volumes have an ink signature on the front pastedowns of "J P Bastard" (John Pollexfen Bastard (1756 â€" 1816) who was a British Tory politician, landowner and colonel of the East Devon Militia He was elected Member of Parliament for Truro in 1783 and for the Devonshire Constituency from 1784 According to the Oxford Companion to Children's Literature, he indirectly inspired the familiar form of the children's rhyme "Old Mother Hubbard" after instructing its author Sarah Catherine Martin, his sister-in-law, to "run away and write one of your stupid little rhymes") xxi, 381, xii, 502 pp. Good.
