It is still a very beautiful lake, although its waterline varies more than natural lakes normally do, according to rainfall. Close on the eastern side Helvellyn rises in majestic bareness to 3,118 feet. The western shore is less striking but from its lower slopes rise the formidable Fisher, Raven and Bull Crags. The lake water flows north through picturesque St John's Beck, and eventually joins the Derwent.
