Description: The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall First edition, first printing, an association copy inscribed by Hall to Scottish author and socialist Robert Cunninghame Graham London: Jonathan Cape, 1928. A fantastic association copy of the first edition, first printing, signed by Radclyffe Hall on the half title page and inscribed to Scottish author Robert Cunninghame Graham (1852-1936) in black ink on the half title page. With "Whip" uncorrected on page 50, line 13; with three instances of penciled corrections potentially in Hall's hand on pp. 33, 50, and 241. A scarce signed copy of the notoriously banned book that faced a wave of suppression. The plot follows the life of a lesbian, openly portraying her "sexual inversion" as natural during a time when homosexuality was not openly discussed. Cunninghame Graham wrote the introduction to Hall's obscure fourth book of poetry, Songs of Three Counties, and Other Poems. In his introduction, he compares Hall to legendary poets such as Sappho, Campion, Petrarca and Villon, and applauds her for "not striving to be modern or filled with strange conceits." Bound in publisher's black cloth with spine lettered in gilt; black topstain. Very Good+ inner hinges repaired. Light wear to cloth at extremities, contents tanned and with sporadic minor closed tears to margins, occasional spots and stains. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell case with morocco spine label stamped in gilt. Provenance: The Collection of Erica Jong and Ken Burrows - Doyle New York 11 May 2023, Lot 109. Jong is an American novelist, satirist, and poet, known particularly for her 1973 novel Fear of Flying. The book became famously controversial for its attitudes towards female sexuality and figured prominently in the development of second-wave feminism.
