Description: The Turn of the Tide by Arthur Bryant is a vivid account of how a Government operates in war time and particularly of the relationship between the civil Government and its military advisers. Make no mistake about it. The Turn of the Tide belongs, along with Churchill’s The Second World War, Sherwood’s Roosevelt and Hopkins and Eisenhower’s Crusade in Europe, among the primary, indeed obligatory, inside stories of World War II. No other book to have come out of that war surpasses it in fascination or historical importance. None is franker, more vivid or more perceptive than this one which Arthur Bryant has based on the 1939-1943 diaries and later autobiographical notes of General Sir Alan Brooke, the first Viscount Alanbrooke. None, including Churchill’s, is more enlightening about Sir Winston. And none has been more needed to assure to a key contributor to the Allied victory his proper place in history. Sir Arthur Wynne Morgan Bryant was an English historian, columnist for The Illustrated London News and man of affairs. His books included studies of Samuel Pepys, accounts of English eighteenth- and nineteenth-century history, and a life of George V. Bryant's historiography was often based on an English romantic exceptionalism drawn from his nostalgia for an idealised agrarian past. He hated modern commercial and financial capitalism, he emphasised duty over rights, and he equated democracy with the consent of "fools" and "knaves" The dust jacket for this book has extensive wear and tear but is still mostly covering the cover. The cover of the book has some wear and it appears that there is an ink marking above the title plate on the binding. There are initials and a price written on the first page that has photos on it. Flipping through the book I notice no writing on the inside pages. Please see photos and ask questions before purchasing this collectible WWII history.
