Description: .The Texas Methodist Historical Quarterly, Volume 1, Number 1, July, 1909. This is a rare and unusual early Texas periodical, focusing on the history of Methodism in Texas. The Methodists have been and are one of the largest Protestant denominations in Texas and the material in this inaugural issue takes one back to the very earliest days of Anglo Texas. There are reminiscences of early settlers before the Texas Revolution when Catholicism was the official religion of Mexican Texas, reminiscences probably very hard to find anywhere but in this issue. And there are multiple other articles/pieces relating to the early history of Methodism in Texas. Interesting for the general history of Texas not just the history of Methodism, the issue is also notable as one of the editors is E. L. Shettles, who became a book dealer and is the first in the line of the longest unbroken chain of familybook sellers in Texas, now the Wright Brothers out of Waxahachie, I think four or five generations on from Shettles. Reverend Shettles also helped seed the library at SMU, shortly to be born in 1911. The issue is published in Georgetown, Texas, home of Southwestern University, still there, and then the premier Methodist institution in Texas, which has a wonderful advertisement on the back cover that asks one to write Dr. Hyer for a Catalogue. Dr. Hyer became SMU's first President. The issue is in good condition overall, with a somewhat loose front cover and chipping to the covers. And some of the pages remain unopened. Shipped only to locations in the United States. Shipped with USPS Media Mail. Shipping free of charge.
