Description: A rhododendron is a very large genus of about 1,024 species of woody plants in the heath family. They can be either evergreen or deciduous and most species are native to eastern Asia and the Himalayan region, but smaller numbers occur elsewhere in Asia, and in North America, Europe and Australia. For the last 100 years the Cox family of Glendoick, Scotland have become world-renowned experts due to their collection in the wild, cultivation, propagation and hybridization of these beautiful plants. In this his First Edition book “The Smaller Rhododendrons” Peter A. Cox has written a comprehensive guide for the smaller species rhododendron. Published in 1985 by Timber Press of Portland, Oregon, Cox covers every aspect of growing and caring for the species, as well as a complete description of all species in cultivation. It is beautifully illustrated with color plates and many line drawings by Margaret Stones and with nearly 50 photographs. Tucked between Perth and Dundee, Scotland is where three generations of the Cox family – Euan, Peter and Kenneth - have built the world famous Glendoick Gardens and Nursey. The Cox Brothers (James, William, Thomas and George) began their business in 1841 as the importers of jute and hemp yarns, but by the third generation Alfred ‘s son Euan had no interest in taking over the business, preferring to stay in London. A chance encounter with Reginald Farrer (a famous garden writer and plant hunter) sent Euan to upper Burma on a plant collecting expedition in 1919. Thus began the three-generation involvement with rhododendrons, garden writing and the development of the gardens and nursey at the Glendoick estate.
