There may be some overlap between the grading of particular records. Near Mint - A nearly perfect record. A NM or M- record has more than likely never been played, and the vinyl will play perfectly, with no imperfections during playback. Many dealers won't give a grade higher than this implying (perhaps correctly) that no record is ever truly perfect. The record should show no obvious signs of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more than the most minor defects, such as any sign of slight handling. An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits, cut-out holes, or other noticeable similar defects. The same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves, etc. Excellent (E): A record that shows minor wear but plays well Very Good Plus - The Vinyl is Clean. A record that has light wear and slight surface noise, but is still enjoyable to listen to. VG+ records will have some slight signs of wear, including light scuffs or light surface scratches. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are fine. Mild handling is acceptable such as marks around the center hole, but repeated playing has not damaged or unshaped the hole. There may be some very light ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. VG+ covers should have only minor wear. A VG+ cover might have some very minor seam wear or a split (less than one inch long) at the bottom, the most vulnerable location. Also, a VG+ cover may have some defacing, such as a cut-out marking. Covers with cut-out markings can never be considered Near Mint. Above Average Very Good - Wear will be moderate to moderate+ (wear is noticeable but not significant) The label has a mild or mild+ fade. Scratches and marks are visible but much less so than on a Good record. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound. Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. Average Good - Good does not mean bad! A record that has significant use and handling. Wear will be moderate plus to heavy. The original gloss will be faded. The record will have groove wear with visible scratches, marks along with significant surface noise. The label is worn, with significant ring wear, heavy writing. A Good to VG? cover has ring wear to the point of distraction, has seam splits obvious on sight and may have even heavier writing, such as, for example, huge radio station letters written across the front to deter theft. Avg/Below Avg Fair -- the record is visibly worn with significant scratches and marks. Heavy wear. Heavy Groove wear. The original gloss has completely faded. Skipping and playback issues are common. Heavy noise should be expected. This is a well worn record. Poor
