Description: One of the most incredible collector pieces for historians and art lovers! The shortcomings of the band-matrix machine were in a great measure overcome when, in 1885, Mr. Mergenthaler developed the independent-matrix machine, in which corrections could be made as the matrices were assembled, the line being automatically justified by the wedge space. The first machine used commercially was in the office of the New York Tribune, where it was used on the daily paper and also on a large book, The Tribune Book of Open-air Sports, which was the first book composed by the new method of setting type. Machines of this pattern were subsequently installed in the Offices of the Chicago News, Louisville courier-journal, Wash ington Post and Providence Journal, all non-union offices.
