Would make a great gift or keep for yourself! Beautiful image here of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian that is over 320 years old. The piece is dated 1699. The etching has some very interesting provenance on the back as well in stamps put on the piece. Was once in the possession of Harvard College as part of the John Witt Randall collection. Then another stamp from the Fogg Museum at Harvard College noting a duplicate when they released the piece from their collection. The paper has a brown tone to it and the image done in black and white, no hand coloring. This fine artwork is being offered to you at a price below what you would see in a high end auction house or art gallery, as we have been selling artwork out of our home for over 35 years. We can therefore better control our acquisition costs, keep commission costs low (if applicable), and finally, we don't have the overhead that the higher end houses and art galleries experience. The etching is a very old original or restrike. No way for us to be certain. You be the judge before acquiring. Very old paper here. Take a look close up of the back image as well from a good viewer. See lots of this piece online in museums or newer reprints, but none of the older ones for sale. Quite a beautiful and catching piece here. In researching the piece online, it appears that some of the side and possibly top margins have been removed. A small tear at the bottom, middle of the engraving, that leads into some crinkling. Pencil markings at both the bottom left and right, below the image. A couple of pieces of conservation tape on the back of the piece near the top. Creases/Seams can be seen in the middle of the piece and near the top. See back pic to view what we are describing here better.
