The Red Pony is an episodic novella composed of three short stories, "The Gift," "The Great Mountains," and "The Promise." The Red Pony tells the story of Jody Tiflin, an adolescent who lives on his father's California ranch and collides with some painful realities of life. Steinbeck's short story, "The Murder," was his first work to win a national award, winning the O. Henry Prize in 1934.
