Harcourt, Brace & World published this edition of THE LITTLE PRINCE by Antoine De Saint-Exupery circa 1960. In hardback measuring about 7-1/4" x 9", this title is notoriously difficult to pinpoint in terms of a printing date, since the Harcourt volumes don't specify a date other than the 1943 copyright. However, the dustjacket accompanying this example does provide an address for the publisher (i.e. 750 Third Avenue, New York 17, New York), where Harcourt resided from 1953 to 1968, and various websites depict the tan boards as an early form. Dustjacket good, unclipped (Price $3.75); sunned spine, small losses including at spine-ends; minor closed tears and stains as shown in our gallery. *A note on the publishing history of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's 'The Little Prince' (from r/Book Collector online, by Classy Til Death:Howdy collectors and bibliophiles,I've been working for some time on a collection of original editions of the works of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, most famously the author of the 'children's' story 'The Little Prince', first published in 1943 by Reynal & Hitchcock in english; the first french language edition was published by Gallimard in 1945.After years of seeing over-priced 'first edition' reprints of the work available on eBay, I'm hoping to curb the misrepresentation by offering this community, at least, a brief publishing timeline of 'The Little Prince' in english.Reynal & Hitchcock, the original publishers of many of Saint-Exupéry's works in english, was acquired by Harcourt, Brace & Company in 1948. Some edition and printing marks within the R&H editions are available here. Copies of 'The Little Prince' list HBC as the publisher starting in 1953. The acquisition of existing copyrights to the work mean copies printed by HBC still bear the original copyright date of 1943. HBC acquired World Publishing Company and in 1960 became 'Harcourt, Brace & World', then again changed its name in 1970 to 'Harcourt, Brace & Jovanovich' after the company's chairperson and president, William Jovanovich. A series of acquisitions and mergers took place during the 1970s and 80s, and some overlap in imprints appears up through 1993, when HBC supersedes. Copyright for the work was renewed under HBJ in 1971. HBJ, under new management, was returned to 'Harcourt, Brace & Company' in 1993, and was acquired by Houghton-Mifflin in 2007.
