Description: British Parliament 1925 Vintage Lithograph 1910 Louvre Museum Antique Souvenir Print This is an art print published in 1910 (100+ years ago) and sold as a souvenir of the Great Masterpieces in the Louvre Museum in Paris...the cover in the box when I purchased these prints in Paris is shown for historical purposes (and is not included). Title: The Inspiration Inspiration (Self Portrait) is so different from many of Fragonard's other paintings in that it is more warm, wistful, and frothy than his other portraits and was produced during the artist's early years. Fragonard's intent here is not only to represent himself on canvas, but also to depict the moment when an artist receives inspiration from a subject. By leaving the subject unknown, the painting becomes a source of inspiration itself, in either a common or divine sense. The artist is caught mid-pose, his actions frozen, his hand with brush in tow, ready for the next action that he will draw from this unseen inspiration. Fragonard wasn't the first artist that decided it would be a good idea to portray himself in the act of painting. Dutch masters such as Rembrandt had long been profound stylistic influences on the Frenchman. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
